Apollo 13 A Successful Failure
Apollo 13 launch
Heading for the Moon
On April 11 1970, NASA’s third crewed lunar landing, Apollo 13 set out for the Fra Mauro highlands to continue humankind’s exploration of the Moon.
“Houston, we have had a problem.”
Two days into the flight, an oxygen tank ruptures and cripples the service module. The lunar landing is abandoned, and the mission’s single objective becomes bringing three astronauts home.
Moonwatch's Role
With the spacecraft powered down to conserve energy, the crew had to time a critical engine burn entirely by hand. Fourteen seconds, exactly, to set their course for Earth. They measured it on an OMEGA Speedmaster.
Apollo 13 splashes down
Return to Earth
Sheltered in the lunar module, the crew splashed down safely in the South Pacific on April 17 1970, bringing home what NASA would call later “a successful failure”.
NASA’s tribute
In recognition of the Speedmaster’s role, OMEGA received the Silver Snoopy Award, a rare honour given by NASA’s astronauts for outstanding contributions to flight safety.
